Automated External Defibrillators Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) remains a major unresolved public health problem; striking over 35,000 Canadians per year. Many times SCA happens unexpectedly and often at work. The only proven treatment for victims of sudden cardiac arrest is early defibrillation (countershock). When a defibrillator is immediately available to a victim of SCA, the likelihood of survival may increase from 2% up to 60%.
